National survey finds Australians more worried about themselves than social issues

Australia’s foremost anxiety and emotional disorder support, treatment and research facility, the Centre for Emotional Health, and The Sydney Morning Herald have today announced the results from their national survey aimed at determining what worries Australians most.
Among the findings, Australians are far more worried about themselves than social issues.

In the first major study of the everyday worries of Australians, researchers from Macquarie University's Centre for Emotional Health found ''future career'' concerns created the greatest anxiety for both men and women, while fear about ''the future'' and ''achievements'' also ranked in the top five.

Panic attacks can happen at any time, in any situation, anywhere.
This week an American pilot on a JetBlue plane suffered a panic attack mid-air, shouted absurdities and had to be restrained by passengers. He was locked out of the cockpit by his co-pilot and then upon the plane landing was whisked off to a hospital for examination.
Fear is a survival mechanism that we all have and we all need. But sometimes it can malfunction to the point where it is a disabling condition.

New Anxiety Test

Research involving an Australian-UK collaboration has shown that a genetic marker, called Serotonin Transporter Promoter Polymorphism (5HTPP), can be used to predict whether a child suffering from anxiety disorder will benefit from cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT). This is the first time that genetic analysis has been used to assess whether a psychological treatment like CBT will work for children.
